One August weekend, I began publishing something that had been quietly growing in me for years – first as a memoir. But this winter, I set it deep into a drawer, too heavy to carry. When I opened the drawer this summer, it had metamorphosed into a butterfly and flew out as a fairytale.

The result is The Girl with the Blue Dog – a fairytale memoir in ten parts that I published on Substack over ten weekends.

It is the story of a Girl born into a world of artists and storytellers, of summers by lakes and forests, and of a ship-like house built high in the branches of an oak tree. A father paints with glowing colors, a mother radiates love, grandmothers keep worlds of fabric, theatre, and gardens alive. It is a childhood full of wonder, but also one that asks what remains when truth falters – and what we can build from imagination.

One night, when a star falls, an Artist stops creating, and a Blue Dog appears. From that moment on, the Dog becomes a guide, leading the Girl toward her own voice – and to the realization that art itself is the most loyal companion.

Each tale is based on my life. Almost every sentence holds a grain of truth.

What now?

A very good friend of mine suggested putting them all together to see what might emerge. In my mind, I see vivid and beautiful illustrations, yet I’m a storyteller, not an artist – so for now, all images must be imagined.

The last chapter ends with the Blue Dog turning into Nemo, and with the Sea Library open, breathing, and glowing. The story unfolds into the life I live today – here, in the red wooden house by the river and forest, close to the sea, with my family and my beloved dog.

Vienā augusta nedēļas nogalē es sāku publicēt kaut ko, kas manī bija klusi audzis jau daudzus gadus – sākumā kā memuārs. Taču šajā ziemā es to beidzot iestūmu dziļi atvilktnē – par smagu, lai nestu. Tā ir stāsts par Meiteni, kas dzimusi mākslinieku un stāstnieku pasaulē – par vasarām pie ezeriem un mežiem, un par kuģim līdzīgu māju, kas uzcelta augstu ozola zaros.
Tēvs glezno ar starojošām krāsām, māte izstaro mīlestību, vecmāmiņas glabā dzīvas audumu, teātra un dārzu pasaules. Tā ir bērnība, kas pilna brīnumu, bet arī tāda, kas jautā – kas paliek, kad patiesība sašūpojas, un ko mēs varam uzbūvēt no iztēles?

Kādā naktī, kad nokrīt zvaigzne, Mākslinieks pārstāj radīt – un parādās Zilais Suns. No šī brīža Suns kļūst par ceļvedi, kas ved Meiteni pretī viņas pašas balsij – un atklāsmei, ka pati māksla ir visuzticamākais pavadonis.

Katrs stāsts balstīts manā dzīvē. Teju katrā teikumā ir kāds patiesības grauds.

Un kas tālāk?

Kāds ļoti labs draugs man ieteica tos visus salikt kopā un paskatīties, kas no tā varētu izaugt. Savā prātā es redzu spilgtas un skaistas ilustrācijas, taču esmu stāstniece, nevis māksliniece – tāpēc pagaidām visas bildes jāiztēlojas.

Pēdējā nodaļa noslēdzas ar to, ka Zilais Suns pārtop Nemo, bet Jūras bibliotēka ir atvērta, elpojoša un starojoša. Stāsts ieplūst dzīvē, ko dzīvoju šodien – šeit, sarkanajā koka mājā pie upes un meža, netālu no jūras, kopā ar ģimeni un manu mīļo suni.
