Seven years ago, on June 4, a small room near the Baltic Sea opened its doors to stories about salt water, sea creatures, adventurous spirits, and deep secrets. The Sea Library began with books — and it has grown into a place of connection, correspondence, and care.
While the physical doors of the Sea Library have now quietly closed, at least for a while, its spirit remains wide open — drifting into new forms, slower rhythms, and unexplored depths.
To mark this seventh year, I invite you to take part in a long-term project:
Write a letter to the sea.
It can be a whisper, a memory, a confession, a question, a love note, a wave of grief or joy — whatever the sea stirs in you. Whatever it is you want to say to it. What does the sea mean to you?
Write a letter to the sea.
Send it by post.
A real letter.
In your handwriting.
From you.
Write if living by the sea, write if landlocked and far away.
You can write in any language.
Each letter will be read by me with love, gently digitized, and shared on sea-library.com — becoming part of a quiet, ongoing archive of voices in conversation with the sea.
As a thank you, you will receive a small gift in return:
a special postcard featuring an original illustration — a paper boat covered in sea-themed tattoos or collected stories from the books traveled — drawn by my sister, an artist Katrīna Ģelze, whose lines carry the grace of the sea.

More about the project and future ideas:
Letters to the Sea is a poetic, participatory digital project rooted in the Baltic coast. It invites people to write letters to the sea — about memory, longing, love, grief, and climate — and sends those letters back into the world as part of a growing online archive.
In the future, selected letters will be paired with woven bookmarks, created by the Sea Librarian using yarns inspired by each letter’s emotional tone. A marine scientist will read and respond to select letters — not with data, but with care — creating a bridge between emotional connection and ecological knowledge.
This adventure is accessible to all — no need to travel or attend events, it offers emotional expression and healing through correspondence, builds ocean awareness through poetic and scientific voices and creates a legacy archive that can grow with time and community. This project is a correspondence — between humans and sea, science and emotions, solitude and community.
Last but not least, Letters to the Sea supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water (an important goal) by fostering emotional and cultural connection to the ocean. Through personal storytelling, marine responses, and poetic interpretation, the project strengthens ocean literacy — not by teaching facts, but by nurturing care and love.
When people write to the sea, they begin to listen to it.

Pirms septiņiem gadiem, 4. jūnijā, neliela istaba pie Baltijas jūras vēra durvis stāstiem par sālsūdeni, jūras radībām, piedzīvojumu gariem un dziļiem noslēpumiem. Jūras bibliotēka sākās ar grāmatām – un laika gaitā kļuvusi par vietu, kur satiekas cilvēki, sarakstes un rūpes.
Lai gan Jūras bibliotēkas durvis šobrīd ir klusi aizvērtas, vismaz uz laiku, tās gars joprojām ir plaši atvērts – pārejot jaunos formātos, lēnākā ritmā un vēl neizzinātos dziļumos.

Tas ir dialogs – starp cilvēku un jūru, zinātni un jūtām, vienatni un kopību.
Un visbeidzot – “Vēstules jūrai” atbalsta Apvienoto Nāciju Ilgtspējīgas attīstības mērķi Nr. 14: Dzīvība ūdenī — veicinot emocionālu un kultūras saikni ar jūru. Caur personīgajiem stāstiem, zinātniskajām atbildēm un vēstuļu interpretāciju šis projekts veido jūras izpratni – nevis caur faktiem vien, bet rosinot rūpes un mīlestību.
Jo, kad cilvēki sāk rakstīt jūrai, viņi sāk arī ieklausīties.
