This is the first sailor’s bookmark I’ve woven in years—and it carries more than just color and thread. It carries a mission.
Some of you might remember the earlier sailor’s bookmarks I created a few years ago. They were woven with the same love for the sea and stories, and found homes all over the world—from Sweden and Germany to Qatar, Hong Kong, Great Britain, Scotland, and even as far as Hawaii. For a while, they could even be found in a beautiful shop in the Azores.
And now, they have returned.
The yarn I use today is thinner, which makes each bookmark even more intricate, more delicate. It takes a few days to make just one. But that slow, careful work is part of the joy—thread by thread, the sea takes shape.
This particular bookmark is inspired by the striking cover of Call Me Ishmaelle (2025) by Xiaolu Guo. The palette of the cover is all there—inky black, bold red, sky and wave-blues. It’s a story in stripes. And it’s more than just a bookmark. It’s a tide that brings new books to the shore.
A Bookmark That Buys a Book
For every sailor’s bookmark sold, Sea Library will add one new children’s book about the sea to its collection.
One bookmark = one sea story for a child.
It’s a small gesture, but a meaningful one. A bookmark for you. A book for them. You can support this wave of stories by ordering your own woven bookmark—each one inspired by books covers from the Sea Library shelves.
