Homer’s horrible creatures, Scylla and Charybdis, keep re-appearing in many stories of the Sea Library. One of the books with a lovely take on the ancient sea monsters is “Okeāns un tuksnesis” (Ocean and Desert), a children’s book in Latvian about a penguin Humboldt Humboldt and lama Atacama, who meet on the edge of the ocean and desert and want to swap places.
Penguin and lama yearn for what they don’t have. They dream of finding a better place than the one where they grew up in. It often seems that others lead a better life, a more interesting and happy one. Until both realize that it’s not such a good idea: lama woun’t survive in the ocean and desert is too hot and dry for a little penguin to live in. Gently guided by two wise desert dogs, penguin and lama admit that there’s so much more to explore in their own home. This story doesn’t have a traditional happy ending. Lama and penguin don’t fulfil their crazy dreams. They achieve a lot more by returning where they belong and finding gems where they couldn’t see ones before.
Ocean and Desert is written by Latvian author Inese Paklone. She was inspired by her two long travels to Chile in South America. She loved to explore this nearly 4000 kilometers long country with such geographical diversity: there are mountains, forests, and deserts, there is snow and ice, and different bodies of water. The book is beautifully illustrated by Latvian artist Alise Mediņa. Each spread is a painting; when looking up close, you can see the brushstrokes and nearly touch the texture of a canvas. This book was gifted to the Sea Library by my sister, Katrīna Ģelze, also an artist.

Two wise desert dogs, Louis and Reina, are guarding the shoreline where desert meets the ocean. It’s the Atacama desert in northern Chile, and the cold Humboldt Current in the Pacific Ocean, that travels past it. It’s here where lama and penguin meet for the first time. / Divi gudri tuksneša suņi, Luiss un Reina, sargā krasta līniju, kur tuksenis satiek okeānu. Tas ir Atakamas tuksnesis Čīles ziemeļos un Humbolta straume Klusajā okeānā, kas plūst gar tuksnesi. The little Lama wants to leave the desert and go into the ocean to live with fish and seabirds, while the little penguin wants to explore the desert. / Lama Atakama un pingvīnēns Humbolts Humbolts vēlas apmainīties dzīvesvietām. Mazā Lama grib pamest tuksnesi un doties okeāna, lai dzīvotu ar zivīm un jūrasputniem, savukārt pingvīns vēlas atklāt tuksnesi. Lama and penguin tell each other how they ended up here on the shoreline. What creatures have they met on their way and what they have learned. When it’s penguin’s turn, he tells about scary nets and fishes and also about two beautiful squids, Humboldt squids, that glow in many colours and were friendly with the little penguin. Scylla and Charybdis were going on a hunt to feed on sardines and took the hungry penguin with them. “No one wants to end up between Scylla and Charybdis!” Both warn, explaining how they hunt in team. / Lama un pingvīns stāsta viens otram, kā te krastā nonākuši, kādas radības ceļā sastapuši un ko jaunu iemācījušies. Kad ir pingvīna kārta stāstīt, viņš atceras baisos tīklus, kuros ieķēries, un zivis, kuras saticis, un tad izstāsta par diviem skaistiem kalmāriem – Humbolta kalmāriem, kas spīd visdažādākajās krāsās. Abas kalmāres, Skilla un Haribda, izrādās draudzīgas pret pingvīnu un aicina viņu līdzi sardīņu medībās. Scylla tells how intelligent they are and how many other squid species there are, counting on her ten tentacles like on fingers: hooked squid, pencil squid, cockeyed squid, glass squid, fire squid and so many others. Then they invite little penguin on a little adventure. He swims up to take a breath and joins them… / Skilla un Haribda, Humbolta kalmāres, iepazīstina ar sevi. Skilla atklāj, cik inteliģenti dzīvnieki ir kalmāri un cik daudz ir to sugu. Uz saviem desmit taustekļiem kā uz pirkstiem viņa skaita: āķroku kalmāri, zīmuļkalmāri, dažādacu kalmāri, stikla kalmāri, uguns kalmāri un daudzi citi. Tad abas uzaicina pingvīnēnu doties nelielā piedzīvojumā. Humbolts Humbolts uzpeld virspusē ievilkt dziļu elpu un atgiežas dzīlēs…Squids suddenly get scared of little penguin, they don’t hear very well, and hide leaving a cloud of ink. When they recognize little Humboldt Humboldt, they show him sunken ships with treasure in them. They explore the wondrous world of sunken treasure, but you have to be careful… / Kalmāres pēkšņi izbīstas, kad pingvīns uzrodas no jauna, jo abām nav pārāk laba dzirde. Viņas zibenīgi noslēpjas, atstājot aiz sevis vien tintes mākoni. Kad pingvīns ir no jauna atpazīts, Skilla un Haribda parāda viņam nogrimušus bagātību kuģus. Te ir bīstama zemūdens klints, viņas stāsta, ko grūti pamanīt un uz kuras kuģi bieži avarē. Visi trīs ienirst dziļāk, lai izpētītu dārgumus, bet ir jābūt uzmanīgam……an octopus hides in one of the ships, very good at camouflaging! Humboldt Humboldt swims for his life and a wave helps him to get to the shore. That’s how he got there, on the shoreline between the ocean and desert. That’s how he met little lama Atacama and both wise desert dogs. / …jo vienā no kuģiem prasmīgi slēpjas astoņkājis! Humbolts Humbolts ātri peld prom, lai paliktu dzīvs, un vilnis palīdz viņam izkulties krastā. Tā arī viņš nonāca vietā, kur tuksnesis satiek okeānu. Tā viņš satika lamu un abus gudros tuksneša suņus.In the end the little penguin agrees that it is better to live in the ocean than in the desert. There’s still so much to explore right here. / Grāmtas beigās mazais pingvīns piekrīt, ka tomēr būtu labāk palikt dzīvot okeānā, nevis doties pingvīniem nepiemērotajā tuksnesī. Ir vēl tik daudz neizpētītā tepat mājās.
Homēra baisās radības – Skilla un Haribda – dzīvo vairākos Jūras bibliotēkas stāstos. Viena no grāmatām ar pavisam jauku pieeju senajām jūras briesmonēm ir “Okeāns un tuksnesis”. Tā ir bērnu grāmata, kas stāsta par pingvīnu Humboltu Humboltu un lamu Atakamu. Abi dzīvnieki iepazīstas vietā, kur okeāns satiek tuksnesi, un izsaka vēlmi apmainīties ar dzīvesvietām.
Pingvīns un lama vēlas to, kā viņiem nav. Viņi sapņo par iespēju atklāt labāku pasauli par to, kādā uzauga. Bieži vien liekas, ka citiem klājas labāk, ka citi dzīvo interesantākas un laimīgākas dzīves. Līdz abi mazie dzīvnieciņi aptver, ka tā nemaz nav laba doma: okeāns nav domāts lamai, bet tuksnesis ir par sausu un karstu, lai tajā izdzīvotu mazs pingvīns. Divu gudru tuksneša suņu vadīti, pingvīns un lama atzīst, ka arī viņu mājās ir vēl tik daudz neatklātā un neizpētītā.
Šim stāstam nav klasiskas laimīgās beigas. Lama un pingvīns nepiepilda savus trakos sapņus. Tomēr viņi sasniedz kaut ko daudz vairāk, atgriežoties tur, kur viņi iederas, un atrodot dārgumus tur, kur likās, ka to it nemaz nav.
Grāmatu “Okeāns un tuksnesis” ir sarakstījusi Inese Paklone.
