Kids Sea Library: Underwater Gardener Sergio Gamberini

“It was then ten in the morning; the rays of the sun struck the surface of the waves at rather an oblique angle, and at the touch of their light, decomposed by refraction as through a prism, flowers, rocks, plants, shells, and polypi were shaded at the edges by the seven solar colours. It was marvellous, a feast for the eyes, this complication of coloured tints, a perfect kaleidoscope,” observes Professor Annorax, walking the bottom of the sea for the first time alongside enigmatic Captain Nemo.

“Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under The Sea” is a science fiction novel written in series by Jules Verne and published as a book 150 years ago. It has inspired many ocean explorers, including Jacques-Yves Cousteau, also an inventor of aqua-lung, who called it his ship bible.

I was amazed to find out that an underwater garden with diving gardeners really does exist. Yes, it is even called the Nemo’s Garden – and with basil, lettuce, cabbage and strawberries, orchids and other flowers growing under the Mediterranean Sea it isn’t fiction at all. It is a real underwater farm, an ambitious project first started nearly ten years ago by a visionary soul with a crazy idea.

In the summer of 2012, Sergio Gamberini, founder of diving equipment firm Ocean Reef Group, was enjoying a seaside vacation on the Italian Riviera and had an epiphany. Would it be possible to create the perfect growing conditions for basil, the most popular local herb and an essential ingredient for pesto?

Looking out to sea, Gamberini was struck with an unusual idea: why not try to grow basil underwater? Bizarre as it might have seemed, the idea made perfect sense coming from a diving aficionado and innovation-minded entrepreneur. He made a couple of phone calls and, with the help of his team at Ocean Reef Group, started experimenting, sinking transparent biospheres 20 feet below the surface of the sea and filling them with air.

Idea and bravery of father and son, Sergio and Luca Gamberini, to risk and try, has made it possible for a wondrous world under the sea to flourish and bring harvest. It is the first ever underwater cultivation of terrestrial plants. One of many sustainable advantages is that in this way crops can be grown without pesticides. Nemo’s Garden can also help agriculture to not to be so dependent on water supply as it needs an external source of water only for the start-up of seedlings.

Kids Sea Library wrote a letter and invited Sergio Gamberini to tell more about his unique job.

How did you become an underwater gardener?

I am manufacturing scuba equipment and I love gardening as hobby. It felt interesting to explore the options of bringing some typical land activities under the water by making the required infrastructures for farming and creating sustainable solutions that respect nature. The ocean covers 70 percent of our planet and it might become a key for future generations.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I love to see the crops growing and to notice how the underwater world welcomes these new structures by transforming them as a habitat for sea creatures.

What challenges are there to grow Nemo’s Garden?

There are a lot of challenges. We need to make an efficient system of fresh water production: of collecting it and distributing. We need to produce energy from the environment, to choose the right crops and find solutions to harvest and bring the crops to the surface properly protected. The protection of the biospheres against storms is a challenge, too. As are the bio fouling, the corrosion, the collection of data, I could go on!

Has something fun or scary happened while gardening under the sea?

It is fun to see crabs and other sea life moving around the shelves where crops are growing. One day, while staying in the biosphere I felt the night coming. Suddenly it all went dark. But turned out that a giant school of anchovies was surrounding the biosphere and thus hiding the sunlight. It was impressive.

What inspires you?

To make something useful for the people, creating jobs and making something without creating any damage to the nature.

Is there a book about the sea that you would suggest to read?

I would suggest any book about the space exploration and texts by Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Space exploration and underwater exploration are very similar.

What does the sea mean to you?

I grew up close to the ocean and my job is making products for the underwater exploration. If we save the ocean, we save the planet.

Biju pārsteigta, uzzinot, ka tāds zemūdens dārzs ar dārzniekiem–nirējiem tik tiešām eksistē. Jā, turklāt to sauc par Nemo dārzu (Nemo’s Garden), un Vidusjūras dzīlēs audzētais baziliks, salāti, kāpostgalvas, zemenes, arī orhidejas un citas puķes nebūt nav zinātniskā fantastika. Tā ir reāla zemūdens saimniecība, ambiciozs projekts, kuru pirms gandrīz desmit gadiem aizsāka cilvēks ar traku ideju.

2012. gada vasarā Serdžio Gamberīnī, niršanas ekipējuma uzņēmuma Ocean Reef Group dibinātājs, Itālijas rivjērā baudīja brīvdienas un piedzīvoja atklāsmi. Vai būtu iespējams radīt ideālus apstākļus bazilikam, vispopulārākajam vietējam garšaugam un pesto galvenajai sastāvdaļai? Tā lai to neietekmētu ne sausuma periodi, ne citas klimata likstas.

Skatoties uz jūru, Gamberīnī nonāca pie neierastas idejas: kādēļ nepamēģināt izaudzēt baziliku zem ūdens? Cilvēkam, kas ir niršanas entuziasts un ar inovatīvu prātu apveltīts uzņēmējs, šī doma nemaz nešķita tik traka. Gamberīnī veica dažus telefona zvanus un ar Ocean Reef Group komandas atbalstu uzsāka eksperimentēt, iegremdējot caurspīdīgas biosfēras aptuveni sešu metru dziļumā un piepildot tās ar gaisu.

Tēva un dēla, Serdžio un Lukas Gamberīnī drosme riskēt un mēģināt ir devusi iespēju brīnumainai zemūdens pasaulei plaukt un ienest ražu. Nemo dārzs ir pasaulē pirmā zemūdens saimniecība, kurā tiek kultivēti sauszemes augi. Viena no priekšrocībām ir tā, ka augi var augt bez pesticīdiem – zemei raksturīgie kaitēkļi pie tiem vienkārši netiek. Nemo dārzs atrisina agrikultūras atkarību no ūdens, kas sausuma periodos ir izaicinājums, jo saldūdens šeit nepieciešams tikai pašā sākumā, diedzējot stādus.

Bērnu Jūras bibliotēka uzrakstīja vēstuli un aicināja Serdžio Gamberīnī pastāstīt vairāk par savu neierasto darbu.

Kā jūs kļuvāt par zemūdens dārznieku?

Esmu niršanas ekipējuma ražotājs, un dārzkopība ir mans hobijs. Šķita interesanti izpētīt, vai tādu virszemes aktivitāti kā strādāšanu dārzā varētu pārnest zem ūdens, radot nepieciešamo infrastruktūru un ilgtspējīgus risinājumus ar pietāti pret dabu. Okeāns klāj septiņdesmit procentus mūsu planētas, un tā vide varētu kļūt par atslēgu nākotnes paaudzēm.

Kura ir jūsu mīļākā darba daļa?

Man patīk redzēt, kā izaug raža, un pamanīt, kā zemūdens pasaule pieņem šīs jaunās būves, pārveidojot tās par dzīvesvietu jūras radībām.

Kādi ir izaicinājumi, rūpējoties par Nemo dārzu?

Ir virkne izaicinājumu. Mums ir jārada efektīvas saldūdens sistēmas: gan ūdens savākšanai, gan izlietošanai. Ir jāizdomā veidi, kā iegūt enerģiju no vides, jāizvēlas piemērotākie augi, jāatrod risinājumi, kā ievāktu ražu un nogādātu to virspusē nesabojātu. Liels izaicinājums ir arī biosfēru aizsargāšana no vētrām. Tāpat arī bioloģiskais piesārņojums, korozija, datu ievākšana… tā es varētu turpināt vēl ilgi!

Vai, strādājot zemūdens dārzā, esat piedzīvojis ko smieklīgu vai baisu?

Ir jautri redzēt, kā krabīši un citas jūras radības tekalē pa plauktiem, kuros aug dēsti. Taču reiz, uzkavējoties biosfērā ilgāk, jutu, kā iestājas nakts. Viss pēkšņi satumsa. Izrādījās, ka mani ir ielencis milzīgs anšovu bars, kas aizsedza saules gaismu. Tas bija tiešām iespaidīgi.

Kas jūs iedvesmo?

Iespēja radīt kaut ko cilvēkiem noderīgu, radīt darba vietas un īstenot idejas, nenodarot dabai pāri.

Es ieteiktu jebkuru grāmatu par kosmosa izpēti, kā arī Žaka-Īva Kusto darbus. Visuma izpētei un zemūdens izpētei ir daudz kopīga.

Ko jums nozīmē jūra?

Mana dzīve ir cieši saistīta ar jūru. Uzaugu okeāna tuvumā, un mans maizes darbs ir niršanas ekipējuma ražošana. Ja mēs izglābsim okeānu, izglābsim planētu.
